Each symptom below has a mechanical cause. Understanding the cause helps you make a better decision about timing, and about which repair is actually necessary.
Slow or Jerky Movement
A healthy garage door moves at a consistent speed from fully closed to fully open, typically around 7 to 8 inches per second. When you notice the door hesitating, stuttering, or slowing in one section of its travel, that inconsistency is usually a friction problem.
The most common causes are worn or dry rollers, a bent or obstructed track, or a cable that has started to fray and is catching as it winds. Each of these creates resistance at a specific point in the travel path, which is why the problem often shows up at the same spot every time.

Uneven Closing
When a garage door closes unevenly, one side reaches the floor before the other, leaving a gap on one side. The door looks slightly tilted when fully closed. This is almost always a cable or spring problem, not a track problem, though people often blame the track first.
Most residential doors use a pair of cables, one on each side, wrapped around drums at the top of the door. If one cable has stretched, frayed, or come off its drum, that side of the door loses tension and drops lower than the other. A Door That Reverses Unexpectedly
